Alvin Ailey's spirit and presence continues to overwhelm the dance community for over fifty years. His company comes to North Vancouver in March 2007.
Global Arts Presents: Alvin Ailey - Ailey II in North Vancouver British Columbia on March 1 and 2, 2007. The tour started on February 22 in Medicine Hat, Alberta and will continue on till May 12 in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands. Alvin Ailey II is the performing company that was formed from the AAADT (Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater) in 1974 when Alvin Ailey Jr appointed Sylvia Waters as Artistic Director, and continues this task and joy to this day. The original dancers of Alvin Ailey II were hand picked by Alvin Ailey Jr before he died of a rare blood disease in 1989. Never afraid to do something innovative in the dance community throughout the world, Alvin Ailey's amalgamative dance style continues to shine through in the AAADT and in Alvin Ailey II. Being an African American and starting a new dance company in 1953, Alvin Ailey had a respectable dream for his time: to integrate different people into one common desire - to give the world the gift of dance. And Alvin Ailey II has continued to do this over the eighteen years since Ailey's death. Keeping the grassroots and mandates which Ailey Jr set forth with are the goals of AAADT's Artisitic Director, Sylvia Waters, and Associate Artistic Director, Troy Powell. Global Arts Presents: Alvin Ailey - Ailey II is presented by the AAADT itself and will be traveling to the following locations.
